Monday’s Finish the Story Flash Fiction Aug 31st

The  Mondays Finish the Story challenge is to write a short story (100-150) words that contain the first line provided and is related to the photo provided. Here’s mine for this week. Enjoy!

Devils Abode
“The cemetery spread along the area known as Devils Abode.”

The cemetery spread along the area known as Devils Abode. Once a peaceful haven and final resting place for New England’s wealthiest families, that all changed on a hot August day.

Grief changes people, those who appear as rational thinking can be overcome and lash out in the most startling ways. Jonathan Stewart was one of those people. A well-respected landowner, he often used his influence to the benefit of the small town and most often himself. It was a shock to Jonathan when the town refused to let him bury his one true love, Murphy, beside his late wife.

The Welsh Terrier had been Jonathan’s shadow for 14 years. Leaving instructions that Murphy was to be buried in his casket, Jonathan took action. The town was torn apart when his body was found propped up against his wife’s tombstone, Murphy cradled tightly in his arms. The large endowment left to the town settled the matter.

  1. So sad, you brought tears, but i can see it happening. And I’d want the same, but alas my precious little one is buried in the back yard. A statue of stones to mark her resting place. I see it everyday and remember her love, and the joy she always brought me!
